A refuge made of stone, glass, and cedar wood
A retreat at the heart of the High Sierra. A young family takes refuge from their hectic life in Silicon Valley, in their lodge located high in the mountains around Lake Tahoe. Fittings by Dornbracht are also part of the overall concept by Cynthia Wang, the founder of Studio Ren Architecture, and interior designer Jamie Bush.
Seamless Living, Natural Harmony
The private house is part of the exclusive Martis Camp ski and golf community, and is one of the lodges scattered across the surrounding coniferous forests that have been personalised to suit individual tastes. The two creators, Wang and Bush share a vision: an audaciously modernistic design made from materials that will develop a patina over the years and become part of the natural landscape as a matter of course. The elements of stone, blackened steel, glass, and cedar wood making up the façade are also used inside the building, skilfully blurring the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. Materials such as oak panelling and cork wall coverings, black concrete and bleached walnut flooring, also create depth and texture within. The extensive use of glass on the façade reinforces the feeling of being right in the middle of the old sequoias surrounding the house.
The spacious rooms merge freely into one another, creating an atmosphere that imparts openness and intimacy in equal measure. The kitchen and living room form a comprehensive living space that, when the sliding windows to the garden are opened, almost becomes one with nature. Elio by Dornbracht can be found on the kitchen island that directly adjoins the dining area and a lavish collection of sofas: The subtle elegance of the Brushed Platinum finish draws attention to the strictly monochrome colour concept of dark grey surfaces, tiles, furniture, and accessories.
A constant and imaginative variation of warm greys also prevails in the other rooms: Catching the eye in the children’s room, for example, is a wall painting showing a panoramic view of snow-covered mountain tops in a playful cartoon style. In the bedrooms, on the other hand, the bleached walnut flooring and simple furnishings ensure a homely and relaxing atmosphere. The forest from the beds is like looking at a screen.
