A play of contrasts in the Alps: two flats in Kirchberg

Iserlohn, 23 April 2025

Experience the mountains in a contemporary way: The renowned Milan-based architecture studio Storagemilano has designed two adjoining twin flats in Kirchberg, Austria – creating a design experience that is unique in the Tyrolean Alps. The protagonist in all the bathrooms is Tara by Dornbracht.

Modern interplay of contrasts
The two mirrored flats, only slightly different in size, are part of a newly built residential complex. With great attention to detail, a contemporary ambience has been created that is in a respectful, open dialogue with the impressive alpine landscape. A carefully planned interior layout allows for a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding peaks.

An interplay of contrasts runs through the entire design concept: the materials used should emphasise the modern character of the interior, but at the same time remain true to the spirit of the mountains. In both flats, warm brass lustre meets the coolness of patinated steel. Wood and travertine form harmonious combinations with Alcantara fabric coverings, which add a soft texture to the robust natural materials. The furnishings also blend modern simplicity with traditional design elements of Alpine architecture, such as the typical heavy ceiling beams. Large windows flood the living and dining area with natural light. The use of concealed lighting and numerous expressive designer lamps further enhance the cosy atmosphere.

Harmonious bathroom ensembles made of natural stone
The bathroom design is also characterised by an elegant balance between innovation and tradition. Both flats have two identically designed bathrooms. The open-plan structure is striking: a small and larger bathroom leads off from a narrow corridor with a washbasin and bench. The larger one is fully cladded in grey, aesthetically grained natural stone. Together with the strict geometries of the washbasin, it creates an impressive clarity and calm, which is emphasised by the dark glass shower wall. The smaller bathroom, on the other hand, is dominated by light-coloured travertine, stylishly complemented by brass elements.

Tara from Dornbracht can be found in all four bathrooms. As a wall-mounted fitting, the design icon blends discreetly into the various ensembles but sets a striking accent with its characteristic cross-shaped handles. The same applies to the shower solutions, which are also fitted with Tara controls. The finishes in Brushed Dark Platinum, with their modern colour tone, create an exciting contrast to the natural stone – and thus emphasise the interplay of contrasts that is picked up on in all rooms.
