Where nature and the landscape set the pace: Nestled among the Hohe Tauern mountains, about 70 kilometres from Salzburg, lies the Moar Gut. Resembling a mountain village, this 5-star resort is one of Europe’s best-known family resorts which has recently undergone several modernisations and expansions. In the bathrooms and spa, Vaia by Dornbracht contributes to the comprehensive feel-good atmosphere.
From farm to luxury resort
Just 50 years ago, the “Mayrhof” – commonly known as the “Moarhof” – was a farm surrounded by meadows and forested mountain slopes. The farm, complete with sheep, pigs, and chickens, is now run by the third generation. Over the decades, an impressive resort designed primarily for families and their children has grown around it: Extensions were added to the vacation rooms, followed by a spa and cinema, a naturally landscaped swimming lake, an indoor riding arena, trampoline hall, and an interactive gaming room. In 2021, this car-free idyll was finally expanded once again with two suite towers, and in 2024 a new wellness building and a concept store. This way, the Moar Gut has long since grown into a small Alpine village.
Intelligent wooden architecture
With their intelligent wooden structures, the various new buildings designed by architect Thomas Lechner blend into the Alpine landscape as harmoniously as they do naturally. Beyond that, the Moar Gut combines traditional rural building culture with modern timber construction. In all new renovation projects, strict attention is paid to treating the surrounding nature with respect: sustainable materials and local craftsmanship play just as important a role as a well-thought-out energy concept, including geothermal energy and an on-site spring.
Light, organic colour palette
The same approach applies to the interiors: Swiss stone pine from local forests, regional natural stone, and materials like loden create an authentic atmosphere. The ubiquitous wood is complemented by soft fabrics and a colour palette inspired by the natural landscape without imitating it: earth tones, shades of white, soft beige, and grey hues. Numerous windows not only ensure that the suites and common areas are flooded with light but also offer magnificent panoramic views of the Salzburg mountains from every angle.
Open-concept bathrooms in the suites
In many suites, the Moar Gut opts for an open, flowing design that sometimes integrates the bathrooms directly into the living spaces. Beige natural stone walls and tiles seamlessly blend with the wood panelling; the bathtub fits naturally into the living area. Vaia by Dornbracht, as a freestanding tub faucet, is also part of these open ensembles, with its elegant Brushed Platinum finish gracefully complementing the washbasins and showers. In other bathrooms, Vaia in Brushed Dark Platinum provides one of the few distinct contrasts within the overall light aesthetic. With its delicate lines and slender silhouette, the Dornbracht faucet cuts a fine figure, not least in the spa area: at the bar, the soft gold tone of Brushed Durabrass (23kt Gold) completes the spacious, feel-good environment characterised by gentle luxury.
