The Dornbracht brand success story is also, and most notably, a story of successful partnerships.
The central figures here – as has been the case for more than 25 years – are three pairs of brothers:
Andreas and Matthias Dornbracht, Michael and Christian Sieger and Mike and Marc Meiré.
During years of collaboration with Sieger Design and the communications agency Meiré und Meiré, Dornbracht has innovatively and lastingly changed the development of the bathroom and kitchen environments. 

“It needs a lot of experience and instinctive feel to develop something suitable for the Dornbracht brand”, explains Andreas Dornbracht, who together with his brother Matthias is the third generation to head the medium-sized family company. They took over the running of the company from their father Helmut, the son of company founder Aloys F. Dornbracht, at the start of the nineteen-nineties. Dornbracht is now one of the few sanitation sector companies to still be in family hands, and as a leading premium segment manufacturer, produces all its products at the Iserlohn location.

“Both Sieger Design and Meiré und Meiré share our premium orientation and have high quality standards. Not only that, they are both family companies with a similar culture and way of thinking. Just like us, they think long-term and aspire to sustainable development – which is a big advantage compared to management-led design or communications agencies”, continues Andreas Dornbracht.  

Sieger Design developed Domani, the first designer fitting for Dornbracht, in 1985 – Dieter Sieger still had overall control at the time, but passed the business on to his sons shortly afterwards.
Meiré und Meiré took over all communications for the Iserlohn-based premium fittings manufacturer at the beginning of the nineteen-nineties. The close partnership that Dornbracht still enjoys with them both has continued to grow over the years.

“Our working relationship is much more team-based than it was to start with, however. Previously, you would issue a briefing and then three months later, be presented with a complete concept. Nowadays, we are constantly exchanging ideas and information with the teams at Sieger Design and Meiré und Meiré”, declares Andreas Dornbracht. His areas of responsibility within the company are Strategy, Finances, Communication and Marketing, whereas Matthias Dornbracht is in charge of developing systems and technologies, along with his responsibility for Operations. “Both partners are involved in the product development process, right from the start. Technology, design, marketing and communication are always closely intertwined.”

Dornbracht has been continuously setting standards over the last three decades, whether with iconic designs such as Tara and MEM, with solutions for digital water control such as Smart Water and the Ambiance Tuning Technique (ATT), with eUnit Kitchen and the Water Zones, with Horizontal Shower and Sensory Sky or with the most recent concept, LifeSpa. “If you look at these milestones as a whole, you realise that what makes the Dornbracht brand so special is the culture behind it; that there are entrepreneurs here who really are happy to take innovations on board”, says Mike Meiré. And it is also the willingness to take risks, emphasises Michael Sieger: “The special quality of our collaboration with Dornbracht is that we also implement product concepts which we know will initially pose a challenge to the traditional market.”

 

Dornbracht was a pioneer of digitalisation in bathrooms and kitchens. “Basically, we were a few years ahead of our time with Smart Water, the market is only now just starting to develop. But this means that we are even better placed for the future”, declares Matthias Dornbracht. 

 

From fittings manufacturer to design leader

An extremely important milestone in the collaboration with Sieger Design was the launch of the Tara series of fittings in 1992. The minimalist fitting with the characteristic cross-handles paved the way for a new, aesthetic understanding of contemporary bathroom design and after Domani, firmly established Dornbracht’s reputation as a design leader. This was accompanied by a radical change in corporate design, as implemented by Meiré und Meiré. The agency took over communication for Dornbracht at the same time Tara was launched, with Mike Meiré as creative director and Marc Meiré in charge of strategic and operational processes. “The artistic creativity of Sieger Design was really radical and new at that time”, explains Mike Meiré. “But it also posed a question: what do we do with the logo? All those involved agreed that continuing with the traditional Dornbracht lettering was not an option. It had to be shorter. So we simply said, we will cut through the name and run it over two lines. It was almost as if we were slaughtering a holy cow. But Andreas Dornbracht’s response was immediate: we’ll do it. I think that was incredibly courageous of him.”

 

The new, artistically creative line was consistently pursued over the years and decades that followed – up to and including the present day.  As before, Dornbracht’s entire product portfolio is created and developed in collaboration with Sieger Design. It is about far more than external appearance nowadays. “We regard design and product creation as a response to the changing needs of customers and consumers”, explains Michael Sieger, who is in charge of creative processes at Sieger Design. His brother Christian is the business economist responsible for finances, marketing and public relations. Along with aesthetics and functionality, it is about creating added value and including social megatrends in the development process. All parties consider aspects such as “healthness”, individualisation and connectivity in detail. “What will motivate customers – in the next five, ten or fifteen years? These are the questions that occupy us”, says Andreas Dornbracht. 

From “Culture in the Bathroom” to “Culturing Life”
The Dornbracht Culture Projects, which were established in 1996 with the “Statements” series, are an important source of inspiration here. Starting from the new corporate claim of “Kultur im Bad” (“Culture in the Bathroom”), internationally famous artists, photographers, musicians, architects, writers and designers were asked to create their own choice of work in their particular genre on the subject of water, cleansing, rituals and culture in the bathroom. “None of us knew what to expect. We gave the artists carte blanche”, remembers Mike Meiré, who is still the curator of the Culture Projects to this day, and who sometimes actively contributes as an artist. “It was incredibly courageous of Dornbracht to take such a step at that time. Perhaps we can smile about it now, but at the time, it was paving the way for the entire industry.”

 

“Statements” were the initial spark for an examination of art and culture that is still going on today, and which keeps giving Dornbracht crucial impetus for product and brand development. It also provided the inspiration for Dornbracht ritual bathrooms, which were developed by Meiré und Meiré in 2003. For the first time, the focus of attention in the bathroom turned completely to people and their actions – and this approach fundamentally altered the understanding of contemporary bathroom design: from a functional wet room to a place of physical and mental regeneration and ultimately, of personal preventive health care. 

 

Trust and responsibility

Three family companies, three pairs of brothers and a good three decades of collaboration. A connection that has to keep on proving itself all over again, as well as building up trust and demonstrating a long-term commitment to the same aims. “Obviously you have to keep checking: where are we going with this partnership? Are we heading in the same direction, do we have similar ideas about the development of the Dornbracht brand?”, explains Andreas Dornbracht.  

“These are the questions we regularly and openly discuss, from family company to family company. After all, it is these in-depth discussions that make sure we remain on an equal footing – and can go forward together.”

Dornbracht Conversations 8: Are interior trends over? A conversation with Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu from Neri&Hu (Shanghai), and Rafael de Cárdenas from Architecture at Large (New York)
The essentials at a glance:

“Are interior trends over?” – This was the question posed by Dornbracht in the invitations to the eighth event in the "Dornbracht Conversations” series in Berlin. Wanting to reinforce cultural influences in the bathroom, the Iserlohn-based company Dornbracht started encouraging communication between independent viewpoints in art, music, architecture and design in 1996. Since that time, the “Culture Projects” have sponsored numerous exhibitions and projects – not just as an important source of inspiration for long-lasting designs, but also with the intention of seeing the world in a different light.

 

“Dornbracht Conversations” have been providing a platform for public discourse between the different disciplines in this context since 2008. Guesting at the eighth event on 16 November 2017 were Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu from Neri&Hu (Shanghai), and Rafael de Cárdenas from Architecture at Large (New York). The subject up for debate in the creative hotspot of Berlin-Kreuzberg was “Are interior trends over?”, with Dezeen Editor-in-Chief Marcus Fairs discussing with the architects whether trends or styles can continue to survive in the digitalised and globalised world of today. The venue for the event was the new FvF Friends Space, the open and modular architectural concept of which was the perfect setting for the theme of the evening.

 

The starting point for the conversation was the transitional style interior design trend, which Dornbracht is examining in the context of the new Vaia fittings’ series. Created for Dornbracht by Sieger Design, Vaia reconciles classical and progressive style elements, explained Brand Director Holger Struck in the prelude to the discussions. Vaia is therefore equally at home in traditional and modern bathroom architectures – as well as those that combine the elements of different style worlds, in keeping with the transitional style. What could a bathroom look like if it takes up the transitional style, and simultaneously expands on it? To answer this question, Dornbracht had commissioned the architects Rafael de Cárdenas and Neri&Hu to each create a suitable environment for Vaia.

 

When asked whether the architects would assign a specific style to their own work, Rossana Hu replied: “We like to think that we have gone beyond having to fit into fixed categories.” Nowadays, architects and designers do not want to restrict themselves to a specific style, although it is possible that the broad spectrum in which they do their work could become an original new style. Lyndon Neri assumes that the cultural background of an individual could at the very least be an unconscious factor linking different styles and cultures. He comes from China, grew up in the Philippines and studied architecture in the USA. Neri argues that he finds the theme of transition interesting as an intermediate state for his architectural work, both in terms of where and when. In their projects, Neri&Hu were often breathing new life into the story, to take it into the future, explained Rossana Hu, drawing on examples such as the New Shanghai Theatre conversion project that was completed last year.

 


 

The idea for the environment for the fittings’ series came in a project that Neri&Hu were already working on: “House for an Introvert, House for an Extrovert”. Dornbracht recreated the bathroom design true to scale: a marble wall with a golden washstand, with two circular mirrors hanging from the ceiling above it, was placed in front of raw concrete. A visualisation showed a pool opposite the ensemble, with an arched concrete ceiling opening upwards to the sky. Lyndon Neri explained the concept by saying that the fictional space embodies a permanent transition between indoors and outdoors, between wet and dry. “There is always some introversion that remains extrovert, and some extroversion introvert.”

 

Given the formal reference of the concrete moulding to the work of Le Corbusier, Marcus Fairs asked whether the pair would be unconsciously following any heroes. It was Lyndon Neri’s opinion that style in general is less interesting than creative concepts. For example, they were impressed by Valerio Olgiati’s spatial qualities and Carlo Scarpa’s details. The designs of Neri&Hu would not consider opinions, but always spatial experiences, as that corresponded to the “traditional architects” in them.

 

Rafael de Cárdenas’ project report for Dornbracht, on the other hand, mentioned that he initially used models to approach the design task. These included the image of a restaurant, designed to seem as familiar as possible to visitors. Cárdenas also brought together elements which he thought “everyone must have seen somewhere or other”. “I don’t live in a vacuum”, explained the New Yorker. He doesn’t have any books at home, just magazines, because he would rather examine a culture through the lens of its time. He got the references for many of his works from the films of the eighties that had influenced him when he was young. On the transitional style theme, he designed a space configuration for Dornbracht that was based on an s-shaped floor plan. Archways littered the architectural design like a leitmotif, and formed the basis for a game with the lines of sight.

 

But what does transitional style actually mean? Has the “ism” age come to an end? Marcus Fairs asked whether perhaps it has only ever been possible to allocate a style in retrospect. This made Lyndon Neri ask whether architecture had really progressed since the start of modernism. After they had visited the works of Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn, with their obvious references to ancient architecture, the architects had asked themselves how far it really represented something new in their own work. Modernism had never been contemporary, argued Rafael de Cárdenas, which is why it still endured today. Neri, on the other hand, noted that new materials and technologies had made totally new spatial experiences possible in modernism. He thinks that today’s social media and digital technologies give future generations the opportunity to accomplish a new revolution in the same vein.

 

Returning to the present day, Marcus Fairs concluded that culture would lag behind the current technological progress. Rafael de Cárdenas agreed, and said that interior design had still not found an answer to the use of smartphones, but in his view, the question of how the home could also become “smart” was an extremely promising approach to development. “We’ve been talking about smart homes for years, but I don’t know anyone who lives in one”, noted Marcus Fairs, and asked whether this meant that our homes were not yet smart, because we perceived them as a safe retreat from the fast-moving outside world.

 

The question posed by Rossana Hu was “Are trends even important any more?”. They are really just a marketing instrument, and new manufacturing methods make them obsolete. Everyone always used to want the same product. Now you no longer have to be like your neighbour, because products can be custom-made in individual colours and shapes.

 

It was Rafael de Cárdenas’ view, however, that trends and “isms” were still around, but that in the Internet age, they were no longer dictated by the industry, but in fact came “from below”. Young people could become Instagram stars with videos from their garden, brands and magazines would only pick up the trends shown there, instead of setting them themselves. Social networks are a “cacophony of voices”, and are also somewhat daunting, as there is no control.

 


 

“Style is a taboo word”, said Rossana Hu. “We don’t use it when we are talking about design.” Marcus Fairs took up the idea and his suggestion that perhaps we could agree on “voice” instead, because it is a more personal concept, was well-received by the audience. An architect from Milan in the front row provided the concluding comment: “After all, we are talking about how we live, about matters of taste”. Taste evolves from experience. A conclusion that left many questions unanswered and made it clear that further discussion of the previously highlighted difference between trends and movements would indeed be worthwhile.

The innovative form of water application that Dornbracht is bringing to the bathroom is based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It uses the new WaterFan and WaterCurve massage jets to massage tense muscles and specifically stimulate acupuncture points and meridians. This application, which Dornbracht calls aquapressure, is inspired by the tried and tested method of acupressure in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is a simple and time-saving way to integrate water massage into the daily routine. As part of a health-conscious lifestyle, it can make an important contribution to health and well-being.

Whether Ayurveda, Kneipp therapy or Traditional Chinese Medicine, the element of water always plays an important role in holistic health philosophies. Dornbracht’s awareness of the variety of ways in which water can have a positive impact has always been the starting point for developing innovative water applications.

Electronic system solutions such as Vertical Shower, Comfort Shower, Horizontal Shower, Sensory Sky or FootBath are therefore based on the important insights of Kneipp teachings or hydrotherapy. Dornbracht’s LifeSpa portfolio also includes extra products such as the Kneipp hose (WaterTube) and affusion pipe, which allow therapeutic affusions to be carried out in comfort in the shower or even at the washstand.

With the introduction of aquapressure, Dornbracht takes another step forward in the realm of water treatments. Whereas hydrotherapy according to Kneipp is based primarily on the stimulating effect of temperature changes (hot/cold), aquapressure also makes use of water pressure to improve health and well-being.

What is aquapressure?
Aquapressure takes up the principles of acupressure, a tried and tested method used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Whereas in acupressure the stimulus is manual, from fingertips, the ball of the thumb or the elbows, for instance, in aquapressure, this is achieved by the medium of water – with the advantage that with WaterFan and WaterCurve, the application can be carried out independently and effortlessly at home, at any time.

“Intensity of pressure, location, duration and temperature are the basic parameters of TCM that we can
use to influence our life-force energy. The special thing about aquapressure is that all these parameters can be represented simultaneously”, explains Christoph Stumpe, accredited sports scientist and head of the famous Shen Men Institute in Düsseldorf. “The water pressure on the relevant pressure points and meridians, leads to increase in blood circulation in the skin and muscles, especially in combination with warmth. Aquapressure is therefore ideal for easing tenseness – simply while we shower.” Christoph Stumpe has been teaching tai chi, qi gong, meditation and Chinese massage for more than 20 years. As an expert in Traditional Chinese Medicine, he provided the important inspiration for
the development of the new WaterFan and WaterCurve massage jets.

WaterFan and WaterCurve massage jets
Dornbracht has developed the WaterFan and WaterCurve massage jets to enable aquapressure to be used effectively and conveniently in the comfort of the home bathroom. Whereas WaterCurve covers the neck and shoulders, WaterFan provides a massage at thoracic vertebrae height (WaterFan vertical) and in the lumbar vertebrae region (WaterFan horizontal). Their height is adjustable, so the massage jets can be flexibly adapted to the specific height of an individual.

WaterFan and WaterCurve feature a special flow mode: the water fans out into many small particles.
It exerts a deeply massaging effect and is simultaneously soft and gentle on the skin. The pressure of the water can be varied, in keeping with the desired effect. Firm pressure is calming and diverting, moderate pressure is strengthening and activating. Alternating the intensity of the pressure, however, has a balancing effect.

Water massage at the touch of a button
WaterFan and WaterCurve can be used both as analogue and digital solutions. When combined with the Dornbracht Vertical Shower system solution with digital control, there are three pre-set water programs to choose from, which were developed by Dornbracht together with Christoph Stumpe. The scenarios last for five to six minutes and in each one, the pressure and temperature of the water are perfectly coordinated:

Energizing dispenses new life-force energy. It is a powerful water massage that perceptibly revitalises, strengthens and regenerates body and mind. The application helps to ease tenseness and loosen cramped muscles with a combination of warmth and a consistently high pressure intensity. The focus here is on the lumbar and thoracic spine, deeply massaged by means of the WaterFan.

De-Stressing relaxes, calms and helps the mind to let go after a challenging day. As the temperature and pressure of the water gently subside, stress and tension gradually fade away. Both the pressure intensity and the temperature are high at the start of the application, and they quickly increase to the maximum. In this phase, tenseness and knots of tension in the upper back area and neck region are effectively eased. Then the temperature and pressure are reduced to a moderate intensity – the senses are gently calmed, we feel relaxed and clear-headed.

Balancing restores our inner balance. The interplay of powerful and gentle massage flows and varying temperatures harmonises the senses and has a balancing effect on body and psyche. They are brought into a therapeutic balance by a treatment combining activating and calming stimuli. The entire spine is stimulated by using both the massage jets – WaterFan on the lower and upper back and WaterCurve on the neck and shoulders.

The fitting is made from the finest brass and every single part of it is hand-crafted in a fixed direction before the surface finish is applied. This ensures that the individual particles of the finish reach into the finest recesses of the brush strokes. This processing sequence, which is specific to Dornbracht and requires supreme technological know-how, is preserving the structure and lends it an exceptional look.

A remarkable symbiosis of colours and shapes
Based on the designs of the New York architect Rafael de Cárdenas, Creative Director Mike Meiré has developed a bathroom architecture in which Vaia acts as the linking element between the different style worlds. In keeping with the “transitional style” interior design trend, the setting for Vaia in dark platinum matt is an environment full of contrasts. Surrounded by a seemingly organic, cathedral-like architecture, Vaia appears on a monolithic, solitary washstand made from cubes of different materials such as marble and smoked glass. Its angular form stands in contrast to the design language of the fitting, as well as the curving layout of the architecture. Tiles, one of the oldest structural elements of all, provide a dramatic background for the silk dark platinum matt finish.

“Create a new balance – between traditional elegance and contemporary cool”. This is the premise under which Dornbracht will from now on be inviting creative individuals throughout the world to share their personal view of the transitional style interior design trend. Building on the collaboration with architects Rafael de Cárdenas and Neri&Hu in the context of the new Vaia series of fittings, Dornbracht wants to continue the exchange of views across the disciplines. Using the hashtag #createanewbalance, Dornbracht is calling for individual interpretations of transitional style. This is to get a look at the trend in a way that is as holistic as it is progressive.

What is transitional style?
Transitional style describes a mix of traditional and contemporary elements. Notable for its experimental use of materials, textures, forms and colours, it epitomises a world of style that combines the new and the established and brings the different influences of interior design into balance.

#createanewbalance
Bring new impulse, provide inspiration and encourage the exchange of views between disciplines:
This is the aim of the social media appeal, which sends out an invitation not only to creative individuals from all disciplines – such as architects, interior designers, designers and planners – but also to interested end users. Using the hashtag #createanewbalance, Dornbracht is calling for a discussion of transitional style – in as many ways as possible: be it with moodboards, sketches or renderings, new designs or already existing work. Statements about transitional style are also welcome, to throw light on the subject from a variety of different perspectives.

In this way, Dornbracht is initiating a cross-platform debate. Contributions can be posted on all social media platforms. They should be hashtagged #createanewbalance and include the account tags @dornbracht (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest) or @dornbracht_official (Instagram). Starting in mid-July, Dornbracht will be sharing selected contributions on the social media channels Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest.

Background: Rafael de Cárdenas and Neri&Hu developed an inspirational environment for Vaia
At the heart of the #createanewbalance campaign is the collaboration with the architects Rafael de Cárdenas (New York) and Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu of Neri&Hu (Shanghai).

For the new premium designer fitting Vaia, which – in keeping with transitional style – features a classically elegant yet progressive design, they developed moodboards, material collages and bathroom architecture designs in which traditional and contemporary elements are combined in an innovative way.

Supplementary material collages were also created in collaboration with Mike Meiré, Creative Director for Dornbracht. Along with the architects’ designs, these formed the basis of the real bathroom architectures developed by Meiré und Meiré, of which put the spotlight photographically on Vaia.

The bathroom environments produced in this way are the starting point and simultaneously the inspiration for the contributions that will arrive using the hashtag #createanewbalance: individual interpretations of transitional style, which was also the inspiration for Vaia and its soft, balanced design language.

Ispirato al "transitional style", il nuovo rubinetto Vaia di Dornbracht è caratterizzato da un design elegante e progressivo. In collaborazione con Rafael de Cárdenas e Neri&Hu sono state progettate architetture e combinazioni di materiali che servono da ispirazione per i bagni in “transitional style” e, allo stesso tempo, li rimodellano con un approccio progressivo. Il tutto alla luce della filosofia: "Create a new balance – between traditional elegance and contemporary cool" (Creare un nuovo equilibrio tra eleganza tradizionale e stile contemporaneo).

Vaia: un design elegante e progressivo per una nuova iconografia della modernità
Per Dornbracht, il confronto con le tendenze attuali del design è sempre stato un’importante fonte di ispirazione e anche Vaia è il risultato di questo raffronto con la cultura contemporanea.
Ispirato al "transitional style", Vaia incarna un linguaggio formale morbido e ben equilibrato: l’esile bocca di erogazione riprende una forma classica, trasformandosi in una nuova silhouette aperta. Le maniglie, altrettanto classiche nell'aspetto, disponibili a croce o a leva, uniscono la geometria ai contorni morbidi. Le rosette coniche creano una transizione particolarmente delicata con il lavabo. In questo modo, Vaia si integra perfettamente in ambienti bagno con architetture sia tradizionali sia moderne, ma anche negli spazi che riuniscono in sé elementi di mondi stilistici diversi.

Ispirazione per architetti e progettisti
Il “transitional style” descrive, nell’ambito del design di interni, una unione di elementi tradizionali e contemporanei: un sano equilibrio di collaudato e di nuovo con un effetto accattivante, che possa farci sentire “a casa”. Dornbracht ha invitato gli architetti Rafael de Cárdenas, Lyndon Neri e Rossana Hu di Neri&Hu a interpretare questo stile a modo loro, per ottenere una visione innovativa di questa tendenza.

Con moodboard, schizzi, collage di materiali e bozze di progetti per il bagno, Cárdenas e Neri&Hu si sono avvicinati in modo indipendente al soggetto. Le loro idee e ispirazioni hanno costituito la piattaforma per le architetture da bagno che sono state poi sviluppate dall'agenzia Meiré und Meiré.

Le architetture così progettate forniscono ispirazione per la pianificazione e la progettazione per architetti, interior designer e progettisti di bagni, oltre che per clienti privati.

Come è possibile progettare uno spazio che si possa pienamente definire “transitional”? E come è possibile combinare suggestioni tradizionali e contemporanee con idee nuove e personali? Rafael de Cárdenas e Neri&Hu hanno trovato alcune risposte innovative e di grande impatto a queste domande. Conoscendo la capacità di ispirazione de i loro progetti, Dornbracht sta lavorando per dare nuovi impulsi all’interior design. Da luglio 2017, il brand lancia l’hashtag #createanewbalance per invitare architetti, interior designer, designer, progettisti specializzati nell’ambiente bagno e utilizzatori finali a condividere la loro personale interpretazione del “transitional style”, fornendo in questo modo una piattaforma per scambi creativi di idee tra le diverse discipline e stimolando, ancora una volta, il confronto su questi temi.


Rafael de Cárdenas
L'interpretazione del “transitional style” di Rafael de Cárdenas si distingue per l’insolita forma tridimensionale. Dalla morbida curva a S della pianta si creano nicchie che conferiscono alla struttura un aspetto quasi sacro. Gli archi delle porte, che collegano le varie zone, proseguono in modo coerente questo leitmotiv. La cupola trasparente, che lascia passare la luce naturale, mantiene l'architettura letteralmente aperta al ritmo ricorrente del giorno e della notte.

Il gioco di luce che ne risulta si percepisce anche nell'architettura del bagno, che si collega anche ad altri elementi centrali del progetto di Cárdenas: nelle nicchie tonde, Vaia va in scena su un lavabo apparentemente monolitico, fatto di cubi di materiali diversi, la cui forma angolare è in contrasto con il rubinetto e l'architettura. Le strutture in mattoni formano uno sfondo interessante per la nuova finitura della superficie del rubinetto: il "Dark Platinum opaco", un colore scuro sericeo con una leggera pennellata.

Neri&Hu
Lyndon Neri e Rossana Hu di Neri&Hu catturano nella loro interpretazione il “transitional style” nella sua forma originale e creano il bagno come spazio di transizione, un luogo di dimora temporanea e di rigenerazione. "Ci siamo raffigurati un luogo immaginario, una casa abitata da due personaggi: l'introverso e l'estroverso", ha dichiarato Lyndon Neri. "I rituali della vita quotidiana vengono celebrati ed elevati allo stato di cerimonia".

Da questo approccio concettuale, il lavabo si pone all'interno dell'architettura del bagno come luogo comunicativo centrale dell'incontro. Due rubinetti, a parete e freestanding, sono disposti come due interlocutori mentre la base del lavabo riprende la forma delle maniglie a croce di Vaia. Il carattere di transizione dell'architettura del bagno, il gioco tra spazio esterno e interno, è sottolineato dall'uso di forme e materiali opposti. Il marmo incontra il cemento, il bronzo e l'oro si contappongono al legno, che allo stesso tempo rimanda ad influenze asiatiche.

25 years ago, it revolutionised design in the bathroom and is now regarded as an icon of modern bathroom design. Since its launch in 1992, Dornbracht’s Tara has become a much-copied and multiple award-winning design classic. To mark Tara’s anniversary this year, Dornbracht is launching the fittings series in the exquisite cyprum finish.

Hardly any other fitting has made such a radical and lasting impression on bathroom design as Tara. With its minimalist design, characteristic cross-handles and slender, semi-circular spout, it was nothing like the trend at the start of the nineties. But despite – or actually because – of its progressive design language, it did not take Tara long to became a design icon. A mere ten years after its market launch, a book dedicated to its success story was published: “Tara. Homage to a Bathroom Fitting and an Archetype”.

And Dornbracht has consistently updated this story ever since. In 2008, the Tara design was subtly revised – fully in keeping with the guiding principle of “you don’t change a classic, you refine it”. A reduction in the diameter of the handles and rosettes and minimal lengthening of the body of the fitting have now given Tara a more slender, more upright and more delicate look. The contours of all Tara fittings have been sharpened overall, to make the perfect geometry and symmetry of the clear design language even more apparent.

At the 9th Berlin Biennale in Summer 2016, premium fittings manufacturer Dornbracht is sponsoring a work of the artist and architect Shawn Maximo. He is constructing a unisex toilet room on the premises of KW Institute for Contemporary Art that blurs the boundaries between the private and the public sphere.

Shawn Maximo constructs the intimate place as an information centre, as a hybrid between an interior and exterior environment, a private and public zone. Instead of undisturbed privacy, the law of participation and information distribution prevails here. The bathroom is wrested from the protocols of private relief and perfunctory action to explore a more networked and casual experience. Large-format photographs of hyperreal worlds on the walls and ceiling suggest the opening-up of the space, while a large digital tablet connects with the outside world to present Berlin Biennale content. Instead of a conventional toilet, there is a squat toilet that Shawn Maximo has placed in the centre of the space to activate ‘the hub’.

The theme of conflict between intimacy and the public sphere presented here has long been a preoccupation of the fittings manufacturer Dornbracht, in its Culture Projects. It was, for example, the subject of the Dornbracht-sponsored exhibition "One on One", on view at KW in Berlin in 2012. Visitors to this exhibition were given a rather special kind of art experience. Individual, self-contained spaces were set up with works of art specifically conceived for the exhibition and only one visitor at a time was allowed in. An intimate and confrontational encounter with the work of art, instead of the collective and public perception. Following up on this, the fourth edition of Dornbracht Conversations entitled "Public Intimacy" expounded on the loss and re-positioning of privacy.

Finally, this theme was taken up by the installation The Island (KEN), which DIS, the New York artist collective – and the curatorial team of this year's Berlin Biennale – produced in collaboration with Dornbracht and Mike Meiré as co-designers. A hybrid product that interconnects the usually separate environments of the (social) kitchen and the (private) bathroom, thus challenging the learned patterns of logic and application. The Island (KEN) was seen for the first time in 2015, at the Triennale in the New Museum in New York, and then in the Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris as part of the "CO-WORKERS – Network as Artist" exhibition.

Dornbracht's sponsorship of the Shawn Maximo project allows the company to take another look at this issue. This view of the relationship between the public and the private sphere takes particular note of the increase in digitalisation – an aspect that is especially relevant for Dornbracht. As a pioneer in the industry, the company is decisively promoting digitalisation in the kitchen and bathroom environments. Dornbracht's many years of debate and discussion with art and culture constantly provide new impetus. The company has been sponsoring selected exhibitions and culture projects since 1996. At 44 storeys and 160 metres high, the Cosmopolitan luxury apartment skyscraper is the second-tallest building in Warsaw. The internationally renowned architect Helmut Jahn is responsible for the imposing building, the first project he has accomplished in Poland. Timeless design and lasting quality were prevalent in every detail of the furnishing of all 236 luxury apartments (each 52–500 square metres in size), a total which also includes four penthouses. With this in mind, Dornbracht's versatile IMO designer fitting seemed an obvious choice.

Situated right in the centre of Warsaw, the Cosmopolitan is directly between Emilia Plater Street and Twarda Street, the two main traffic arteries of the city. With floor-to-ceiling windows in every room in the tower, unique views can be enjoyed over the city in every direction, including the Palace of Culture and Science and the business district, the Saxon Garden and the Old Town. The bay windows projecting beyond the surface of the building are a special architectural feature, creating an exceptionally wide panoramic view. There are shops and restaurants on the lower floors of the Cosmopolitan, a great attraction for residents and tourists alike.

Living in style in Warsaw
The interior design of the apartments was the brainchild of the Warsaw de novo design studio of Magdalena Dusínska and Magda Jeziorowska. Quality was also a priority in the timeless and modern design of the furnishings. Only the best brands were good enough to provide the materials for everything from furniture to electronics. Intelligent home automation control by means of smartphone or tablet makes these luxury apartments even more special.  

Individual bathroom design with Dornbracht IMO
The Italian marble on the walls and floors creates an ambience of pure luxury and bears witness to exceptional quality. This is also evident in the choice of fittings and shower sets; here the interior designers decided to use Dornbracht IMO. Thanks to its modern design and universal design language that combines a round body with a right-angled lever and spout, the series fits harmoniously into every bathroom. As its name suggests, IMO (short for "In My Opinion") places the emphasis firmly on the individual user's view of life. It is as if the series were made for the Cosmopolitan, which is home to the various inhabitants of the multi-cultural city of Warsaw. The IMO single-lever basin mixer and the matching complete shower set in brightly polished chrome were used for the bathrooms; the full product programme for the series has many different variants for washbasin, shower, bath and bidet.

Dornbracht once again demonstrates innovation capability and design expertise at the Salone del Mobile furniture fair in Milan. A spa trail will highlight the various, forward-looking application examples for the bathroom environment, alongside an exhibition of iconic designs that document the timeless aesthetic quality of Dornbracht fittings. The new Lissé bathroom fitting and an addition to the range of the successful Supernova series will also be on show at the trade fair.

The spa trail
The focus of the Dornbracht exhibition stand at this year's Salone del Mobile is a spa trail experience, which explores the variety of ways in which water can be applied. It shows the transformation from bathroom to private spa by focusing on the individual and their needs. Different treatments can be actively used for preventive health care and to promote good health. For instance, an extending affusion pipe makes it easy to carry out beneficial Kneipp water treatments. Applications such as Sensory Sky, Horizontal Shower, Foot Bath, Comfort Shower and Leg Shower all offer exceptional experiences with water and can be revitalising, calming or relaxing. Also part of the trail is the Dornbracht Water Dispenser, that dispenses cold or boiling, filtered water as required in just a few seconds, thus satisfying the requirement for the private spa to have its own source of drinking water. 

The trail principle clearly shows how products can be flexibly arranged in accordance with individual needs and organised into specific usage zones. Accompanied by choreography of light, sound and fragrance, the trail illustrates the additional value of the different applications and inspires the user to create a configuration for their own private spa that is in tune with their personal requirements.

Iconic designs
Dornbracht is also staging an exhibition of the iconic designs Tara, MEM, Deque, IMO and Madison, as well as the highlights from last year, CL.1 and Sync. All share a modern yet timeless design language that is based on established design principles – Dornbracht's "5 Ps": proportion, precision, progressiveness, personality and performance. The interaction of these five qualities guarantees longevity for the aesthetic appeal of all Dornbracht fittings.

New products: Lissé and Supernova
The new Lissé series of fittings and an addition to the range of the Supernova series will be showcased for the first time, in front on an international audience at Salone del Mobile. Dornbracht's new Lissé series is a premium designer fitting in the entry price level segment that is geared to a quality-conscious as well as budget-conscious target group. The innovative aesthetic quality of Lissé sets the tone in the bathroom – an open invitation to enhance the interior design. A new single-lever basin mixer has been added to the successful Supernova series. The sculptural elegance of the fitting is underlined by a refined design language and an ornamental lever attached at the side.
